This is a silver-plated frame which advertised the wares of James W. Tufts of Boston, Mass. The frame has an ornate design of banners with flowers, leaves, and incised words. Across the top it reads, “Silver Plated Ware of Highest Grade and most artistic design, Manufactured by James W. Tufts, Boston, Mass.” Down the left side it reads, “Hard White Metal with Quadruple Plate of Silver.” Down the right side it reads, “Satisfaction Guaranteed in Every Particular.” Across the bottom it reads, “An assortment of this ware is sold by H. A. Blethen.” H. A. Blethen was the proprietor of a store that sold watches, jewelry, silverware, and a full line of optical goods in Dexter, Maine in the late nineteenth century. James Walker Tufts (1835-1902) was an inventor and entrepreneur. He manufactured and sold Arctic Soda machines through his company, the Arctic Soda Fountain Company. He also manufactured silver-plated wares. He was very successful, eventually building up enough wealth that he was able to develop the Pinehurst resort village in North Carolina in the 1890s. In 1897 he commissioned a nine hole golf course to be added to the resort and later had it expanded to an eighteen hole course which became one of the nation’s first and leading golf resorts. The silver plated frame was undoubtedly displayed in the Blethen store in Maine. It measures 10” tall by 8” wide. The silver plate is tarnished as we found it.
